PRESENTED TO
Snoopy Campbell and Greg Petty

While on Patrol on Tuesday evening, March 12, 2002, Deputy Chief Snoopy Campbell and Officer Greg Petty distinguished themselves and the department by placing themselves harms way in order to secure the safety of a child and mother.

Officer Petty was called to assist an assault in progress call that led to a pursuit that had been initiated by Deputy Chief Campbell. Officer Petty was able to engage to assist Chief Campbell just after entering Arlington. The chase continued into the Cooper Corridor, then down a dead end street. The suspect upon turning around attempted to ram chief Campbell and just missed him, however the suspect did successfully strike Officer Petty’s unit, clearly attempting to take Officer Petty out of the pursuit.

Officer Petty and Chief Campbell then continued the pursuit, until the suspect tire blew out. The passenger, later Identified as the mother of the child, was able to jump clear of the vehicle as it came to a rolling stop.

Chief Campbell and Officer Petty then observed the suspect grab the child, and pour what appeared to be, and later was confirmed as, gasoline over the child. Chief Campbell and Officer Petty then, with complete disregard for their own safety, left cover and moved in on the suspect and were able to distract the suspect long enough for the child to escape. The suspect who also was a wanted felon was then taken into custody at gun-point, without further injuries.

Both Deputy Chief Campbell and Officer Petty honored the highest ideals of Law Enforcement, and distinguished themselves above the call of duty.

On December 15, 2002, Chief Snoopy Campbell and Officer Petty were awarded the department’s second highest award, THE MEDAL OF VALOR, presented by Chief Bill Waybourn.
